OASIS has set up a technical committee to create a Universal Business Language (UBL) which will standardise common business data structures and allow businesses of all sizes to enjoy the benefits of electronic commerce. UBL is being developed in harmony with the OASIS ebXML specifications but also takes into account the recommendations and standards issued by ISO, IEC, ITU, UN/ECE, W3C, IETF, OASIS, and other relevant standards bodies and organisations. The vocabulary and structures of UBL will be aligned with the vocabulary and structures of existing XML business libraries.

The Electronic Business using eXtensible Markup Language (ebXML) project was started in 1999, jointly by OASIS and UN/CEFACT (the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business). Its aim is to provide a modular suite of specifications that enable enterprises of any size and in any location to conduct business over the Internet.

The XML Common Business Library (xCBL) is a freely distributed set of e-commerce documents. It began life in 1997 as Veo Systems’ CBL, becoming xCBL at version 2.0 in 1999 when Commerce One acquired Veo and made it interoperable with EDI. This allowed companies using EDI to update their applications to use XML.

XML (Extensible Markup Language) was derived from SGML as a solution for large scale electronic publishing. It is maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The W3C XML website at http://www.w3c.org/XML/ contains formal technical specifications and details of the working groups who define the XML standard.
